The book is designed to help with READING, COMPREHENSION and LITERACY skills.
Monkey Adventures is designed as a reading development book for Grade 1.
Flip is a baby monkey who lives with the monkey troop. He does not listen to his mother and gets into a lot of trouble as he interacts with the hippos, bushbabies, bees, porcupines and other creatures. The activities at the end of each part of the story include facts about the different animals in the story.
Each part of the story is followed by tasks which help the learners to:
Develop reading skills; recognise sight words; find words in the text; recognise sounds; read for meaning; follow written instructions; find words that sound the same; find words and copy them correctly; write their own words; complete sentences; answer simple questions.
The book can be used in the following ways:
As a class reading activity: The educator reads the story, and the learners follow in their books. She/he re-reads it with the learners reading it quietly with her/him. The third time it is re-read with the learners reading, and the educator prompting where necessary.
As a group reading activity: The learners read the story in a group, with the educator or a good reader, helping.
As an individual reading activity: The learner reads the story and does the literacy activity on his/her own. This can also be fun done in pairs.
As the learners work through the book, it is advisable to go back and re-read the story. This will help with word recognition and memory.
To get the best benefit from this work book, it is important that each learner has his/her OWN BLANK MONKEY BOOK in which to do the fun activities and the extension tasks. I have been amazed at the stories that the children have written using this book. As their imagination is stimulated and their vocabulary develops they gain confidence to write their own sentences and some of them their own stories. The educator can use this book as a skeleton to develop his/her own follow-up activities.
