Prefix is the term used describe a letter or group of letters that are added at the beginning of a root word in order to form a different word. E.g the word discover consists of the root word cover and the prefix – “dis”.
A root word is the term used to describe a basic word to which prefixes and suffixes (affixes) are added. A root word makes sense on it’s own e.g the word improvement consists of the prefix “im” the root word “prove” and the suffix – “ment”.
Suffix is the term used describe a letter or group of letters that are added to the end of a root word in order to form a different word. E.g the word teacher consists of the root word teach and the suffix – “er”.
